Most personal services, rental cars, hotels rooms, entertainment and attractions are subject to sales tax.  The Santa Clara sales tax and city tax burden is 8.75%.

Most personal service such as full service restaurants, haircuts, beauty solons, taxies, room service, etc. all are expecting a tip to be added to the cost of the service provided.  The US Internal Revenue Service requires 15% of every sale/service a person makes in the service business to be added to their reporting of wages.  Therefore the minimum tip should be 15%.  Going lower that 15% has double the impact of your dissatisfaction of service.  In the US good service is rewarded with a 20% tip.  Tips can be added to most bills and paid for by credit card when you settle your bill.
